The Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering provides a broad exposure to engineering fundamentals and prepares the graduating student for a wide range of engineering positions in industry or government. The program also is an excellent preparation for graduate school in a number of disciplines. The program’s focus is primarily on the engineering of mission-oriented vehicles for atmospheric and space flight. In addition to the general education requirements, the student will study aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, space systems, controls, materials, instrumentation, electrical fundamentals, computer applications, orbital mechanics, and design. Students choose to integrate their knowledge in either an aircraft or spacecraft capstone design project. Design projects in a number of courses will develop and refine the students’ ability to integrate their knowledge, communicate both verbally and in writing, and work in a team environment. A large number of hands-on experiences will expose the student to practical engineering to balance the theoretical analysis required to understand aircraft and spacecraft systems.

Areas of study within mechatronics include mechanics, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing, analog and digital electronics, signal analysis, electro-mechanical systems, advanced materials, sensor technology, automatic control, robotics, system design and development, and project management.

The first year of this course includes a set of eight units that are common across all engineering honours courses. This allows students the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the various engineering disciplines on offer and the flexibility, if desired, to switch to another engineering discipline/course without penalty after the first year of study.

The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice, and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, teamwork and project development. As a result, as well as having multiple technical and transferable skill competencies, graduates will have strong analytical skills and the ability to lead complex projects.

An important feature of many programs is the inclusion of research and/or industry experience into either the curricular or extracurricular work done by students. Since BME careers often focuses on research or industrial applications of the field, many programs have seen fit to either encourage or sometimes require experience outside of the standard curricular requirements. Many research universities offer chances for students to participate in faculty research at the undergraduate level. Other schools have an industry practicum or co-ops to give students relevant work experience before graduation.
